Look at what broke the old driveway before replacing it. A slab heaved along one edge next to a tree means roots; the new pour should include root pruning where it's safe for the tree, a root barrier, and possibly a thicker slab in that zone. If the tree is a City parkway tree, talk to the Forestry Division before cutting any roots.
On Modesto's typical loam, a compacted rock base of a few inches is usually enough; near Dry Creek and other low, clay-heavy spots, a thicker base and better drainage prevent settling. Pour at least 4 inches for cars and 5 to 6 inches for trucks or trailers, with rebar or mesh and joints every 8 to 10 feet, starting early on summer days.
